The zarzuela is a performed work much like a musical that alternates between spoken and sung scenes. The Baroque zarzuela originates in early modern Spain, and therefore was influence by the culture present in many of the comedias. Another type of zarzuela is the Romantic zarzuela, which became popular later on in the 1800s.
